GRP stands for ‘Glass Reinforced Plastic’. It is made from polyester resin, which is reinforced by chopped strand mat glass fibres, and then transformed into GRP laminate. It has been used in the UK for over 30 years but in the past decade it has become very popular as a flat roof material of choice.

Unlike felt flat roofs GRP doesn’t require heat to be installed, meaning there’s less mess and fewer unpleasant smells when compared with the installation of felt and other heat-based roofs. Another benefit of GRP roofing is that it doesn’t require super strong roof structures to be fitted, unlike the heavy-duty asphalt roofs that need to be supported by something substantial. You can also guarantee that GRP won’t shrink after a few years, which is very common with EPDM rubber roofs where it’s known to stretch over corners and drains. The end result isn’t a pretty one.
